There are many ways to increase your presence of major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, and others. There are many ways to optimize your website for search engine optimization (SEO). As a general rule, if you see an advertisement or receive a solicitation about guaranteed first page placement on Google, you should be very cautious. There may be some legitimate service providers who are willing to not charge you a cent if they don't succeed in getting you on the first page of a major search engine. Such is not necessarily a scam. However, if such an offer is not based on a full, 100% refund, I strongly encourage you to be very, very careful.

All discussion of search engine optimization technique aside for a moment, here's why. In the end, there is only one entity that determines who is on the first page of Google. Guess who? It's Google. The same applies for Yahoo, Bing, Ask.com or anyone else. It doesn't mean there aren't legitimate techniques for SEO - there most certainly are. But it does mean that language and rhetoric about first page placement guarantees are potentially suspicious.

There is one other key aspect to such claims of first page guaranteed results. If one were to divide SEO services into two categories, there is whitehat and blackhat techniques. You guessed it! Blackhat is what you want to avoid. Really, two categories like this is too simplistic because there is a middle ground that is not necessarily appropriate but not quite blackhat either.

When you are shopping for search engine optimization services, it is best to think of SEO as a long-term strategy. Even techniques that do get you on the first page are very easily (and typically are) quite short-lived. Just like a savings account, mutual fund, or buying stock, a long-term approach provides you with better search engine presence over time.
