Should I Upgrade From Drupal 5 to Drupal 6?

Is it time for your to upgrade your current Drupal 5 site to Drupal 6?

The differences between Drupal 5 and Drupal 6 are substantial in a variety of "categories"; performance, security, features, usability, development, etc. (Read more on Drupal.org). Not all of these improvements of Drupal 6 are necessarily essential for every website, however, the potential benefits are myriad. To be fair in answering the question, it could be said that many of the improvements are "behind the scenes" and wouldn't necessarily be noticeable on every website. Also, some of the improvements of Drupal 6 are probably better realized the more high-traffic a site becomes.

Using Drupal 6 for Production Sites

Back in August 2008, I mentioned that we generally were not doing web development in version 6 of Drupal for a number of reasons. There were many reasons for that.

I really didn't follow-up on that, and since that time we did move over to web development in Drupal 6.x. In the months following the August blog post, more module development was done for Drupal 6.x, as well as porting of Drupal 5.x modules over to version 6.

Drupal Development, Version 5 vs. 6 - Drupal 6 Still Not Quite Ready for Production Sites

We try to keep a fairly close eye on the ongoing development of Drupal - for a number of reasons. Most importantly, we think Drupal is the best CMS (content management system) and probably the best open source project period, hands down, "not a real contest". So, yes, we're Drupal fans.
