Recycle. Rewards. A Green Site Created in Drupal: Greenopolis.com

I could have sworn I already posted about one of my favorite Drupal sites this year: Greenopolis.com. But, apparently I didn't. So, without further delay, one of my favorite Drupal sites this year is Greenopolis.com.

"This year" means a site I found this year. Greenopolis.com has been around for a couple of years now. I only stumbled across it after a local Whole Foods market added a couple of their recycling kiosks. And is my habit on an overwhelming number of websites I visit, I pull up and take a quick peek at the source code. And I tend to be tickled to see websites in general (and especially noble endeavors) done in Drupal.

Open Source Fast Food: McDonalds Australia Website Built in Drupal

Drupal is not just for multi-user websites, government agencies (like the White House), technology companies, and non-profit organizes (Amnesty). Drupal is for tasty burgers and fast food too! As Dries Buytaert (founder of Drupal) listed recently on his site, the McDonald's Australia website is built in Drupal. And among the modules in use is CCK (Content Construction Kit), a very popular module for Drupal.

Drupal 6.18 and 6.19

Interesting. Both Drupal 6.18 (security release only) and 6.19 were both released about an hour ago and within minutes of each other. While I happen to be thinking "hmmm", I don't have time to really look into too much further. But I can't remember the last time (if there was a last time) where two versions were released at the same time. Interesting.

More Hype About Security Vulnerabilities in Open Source Software?

Every once in a while, I bother to take the time to read about security "issues" with open source software. Yes, I put issues in quotes because I've typically found the use of the word to be more hype than fact. And that is one of the reasons I don't engage in such reading more frequently. I do here and there just in case there's a nugget of truth or useful information.

Release of Acquia's Drupal Commons 1.0 Another Hit for Drupal in the Enterprise Arena

I love this statement I read on ZDNet:

As Drupal Commons works its way into enterprises, Acquia gets a chance to teach this important lesson. Open source does make software a shared experience. That’s a feature, not a bug.

And it’s an important one.

Custom Price Module for Drupal / Ubercart Could Be Called the Custom Change Product Module

I posted recently about using the Ubercart Custom Price module for things other than changing the price, like changing the quantity instead: Ubercart Custom Price Module Can Be Used for Non-Price Adjustments Too. Well, you really can change other things, including things that don't affect the price even indirectly. For example, you could even change the title. Try this out: $item->title = 'My funky test title';

ECO (Extra Customization Options for Ubercart) Module Released on Drupal

A beta version of the ECO (Extra Customization Options for Ubercart) module was released on Drupal.org today. As the name implies, this module provides some additional customization options for Drupal / Ubercart sites

.

The module requires the newest version of Ubercart - version 2.3 - as it leverages some API changes in Ubercart. The newest version of Ubercart has many fantastic changes, so we would encourage you to upgrade. Among other things, customizing order notification templates is simpler and better!

Drupal Modules Update Error for Development Releases - July 10, 2010

If you are using development (snapshot) releases of modules on your Drupal site, please note that you may be seeing incorrect messaging on your Updates page. Development releases of modules are generated automatically on Drupal twice a day. There was an error a few days ago that causes all modules with an available development release to have the time stamp marked July 10, 2010.

Strategy for Developing Online Communities and Social Networks in Drupal

Drupal offers many options and possibilities for developing online communities, but strategy should involve more than simply implementing every available module.

Those "in the know" about Drupal realize that Drupal is far more than a content management system (CMS) even though it often gets categorized that way. Drupal as a CMS is more like one specific feature or type of use, of many. It's more of a platform, and on Drupal.org it's labeled as "Community plumbing" and an "open source content management platform".

Understanding What a Drupal Theme Does and Doesn't Do

A short explanation (not for developers) about the general difference between a Drupal theme and Drupal site development

A while back I found myself trying to explain to someone how a Drupal theme that was purchased was not going to result in an entire website being created simply by installing the theme. And I don't think the confusion was simply about content being added. The confusion seemed to be more centered on some very specific and robust features that were desired for the site. And simply put, the Drupal theme was not going to provide those features.

But that's not the fault of the Drupal theme. The particular Drupal theme was going to do it's specific job. And a very robust and/or highly customized Drupal theme may take some very specific features and modules into consideration.
