Save Money by Using a Content Management System (CMS)

This post is:
  • an FYI

You have a lot of different options when you're having a website created. Your choice of options depends in part on what you are trying to achieve. It can also depend on other factors such as budget. If in doubt, choose a content management system.

Having your website created in an open source content management system provides a number of key benefits. First, if it's open source, you won't be tied into a proprietary system, and you'll have the ability to have the code modified if needed. Second, you can update your website on your own - or at least handle most of the updates. Some of this depends on who sets up your site and how it is set up. But in the very least, you should be able to add new pages and edit existing pages on your own without any technical skills.

Even handling minor updates on your own will help you save on maintenance costs, and to some extent - at least - you can be your own webmaster. And if the person or company creating your website in a content management system does a good job, you'll have the ability to do quite a bit more than just simple page edits.

This is based on experience - WebNewCastle puts a lot of effort into customizing websites to ensure that many different aspects of keeping a website updated is as simple as possible for clients - and without requiring technical skills. But this post is made in general about choosing a website. Having your website built in a content management system is generally a very cost-effective solution. And it doesn't necessarily have to cost more, AND it can still be custom designed just as much as a static CSS and HTML website. The primary different is that you have tools for the future and the potential to eliminate having to find an expert for every little change.

A content management system gives you power and control, and if you choose a good content management system, you'll have many tools and options, as well as the ability to grow. Of course, we recommend Drupal - and for many, many reasons. Once you start a website in Drupal, the chances are extremely high that you will not outgrow Drupal as a platform.

In summary, if you have the option of a content management system (CMS) website vs. a static HTML website, take a moment to explore a content management system as the more cost-effective solution to your website needs.
